Description

“If a woman can do the work as well, she is worth as much as a man. The girl artists have the right to expect the same chances for advancement as men, and I honestly believe they may eventually contribute something to this business that men never would or could.” ~ Walt Disney

My second last minute entry to :icondisney-club:'s "The Artists" contest is Retta Scott, Disney's first female animator to receive a screen credit. (for her work on Bambi).

I actually got onto my lazy butt and made a background this time.

Here's her info!:

Who is your chosen artist? Retta Scott
When was she born? And when did she work for Disney? She was born in 1916. She worked 1938 - 1941, and on and off again at Disney as a free-lance artist.
What did she do?
She was the first female animator at Disney to receive a screen credit. She was lucky enough to have her great story sketches discovered by Walt Disney, and she got to animate the dogs who were chasing Bambi's mother. Great powerful stuff! She also worked on Dumbo, Fantasia, and animated some of the weasels in Ichabod and Mr. Toad.
What do you find inspiring about this artist? She was a female animator back in the 1940s! That's pretty dang impressive. To be selected back then to do anything special she had to work twice as hard as the boys, no doubt.
What can every aspiring artist learn from this remarkable person? You can learn a lot about powerful animals looking at her work. Those dogs were pretty freaky. And of course, if you try hard enough, and you love what you do, you will be discovered.

The weasels of course were really fun to draw. (It's not like I've drawn a hundred weasels before this ) Actually, it was while watching The Adventures of ichabod and Mr. Toad that I got the idea to make my comic, May the Rain Come.

I also have a Cinderella book lying around the house that was illustrated by her. It's AMAZING. You can see the art from it here: [link] . Those aren't very good scans, and hardly show off the incredible colors in it... but I think you get the jist. ;)

My other entry:

I always liked that picture you made ever since I first looked at over a decade ago
