William started this little essay way back in chapter six. These are the same words he wrote (some of you may recall).

And hey, I learned something new about my family today. This time about my German relatives. I knew my Grandpa served in Aerial Reconnaissance during WWII, but I never asked about the German side of my family until today. It never dawned on me to ask. :0

While my Grandpa served in Aerial Reconnaissance for the U.S., his cousin Mathias served in the German Army.
Mathias was lucky and survived the war, and was even luckier to be taken prisoner by the allies and put on the the west side of the Berlin Wall. But, even surviving on the west side of the wall was a challenge after the war. Things were desperate for Mathias.
My Grandpa spared whatever he could and sent his cousin clothes and money. I suppose if anyone had found out about that he would've been looked down upon. But, family is far more important than nationality.

When my Dad visited the relatives in the '70s, they cried openly at getting to meet the son of the man who helped save their lives.
